Spare Food is Share Food!
At TJ we are always happy to support the local community wherever possible. So when Nigel Hawke was approached by Gitty Ankers from the Devon & Cornwall Food Association (DCFA), and asked if we could kindly print some of their marketing leaflets, we were happy to oblige!
Nigel has known Gitty through the Cornwall Sustainability Awards for a number of years and she was keen to tell us more about the work of the DCFA. They are a charitable organisation that diverts good food from being thrown away to landfill, and instead, volunteers give the produce for free to community organisations that support disadvantaged people.
400,000 tonnes of edible food is thrown away every year in the UK by the hospitality industry alone and 20-40% of UK fruit and veg is rejected before even reaching the shops. At the same time, 4 million people in the UK are suffering from food poverty.
In its first year the DCFA has prevented around 13,000 litres of milk, large quantities of cream, bread and dozens of turkeys and pheasants from ending up in landfill. This has saved well over ÂŁ10,000 for around 15 local charitable groups including Age Concern, the Shekinah Mission and Plymouth Foodbank.
